Monotype
The monotype is an intriguing hybrid among printmaking techniques, neither a print nor a painting but a unique combination of both. Paint (or ink) is applied to a blank plate. One image (mono) can be pressed from the inked plate to the paper. The resulting piece is essentially a "printed painting." A metamorphosis occurs when transferring images from plate to paper. The brushstroke on the plate is partially absorbed into the paper with translucency that creates a quality of light quite different from painting directly on paper. I love the spontaneity and freedom of this technique, inspiring me to be more flexible and creative in my approach to making art.
